Born in Karnal, Haryana, India in 1962, Chawla defied societal expectations to pursue her passion for aerospace engineering. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College in India before moving to the United States for her Master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Arlington and the Colorado Boulder respectively.

Soaring Among the Stars

In 1994, Chawla became a naturalized U.S. citizen and joined NASA’s astronaut corps. Her dream of spaceflight became a reality in 1997 when she served as a mission specialist and robotic arm operator on the Space Shuttle Columbia’s STS-87 mission. This historic mission made her the first Indian-origin woman to travel to space, capturing the imagination of people worldwide.

A Tragic Loss and Enduring Legacy

Sadly, Chawla perished along with the six other crew members aboard the Columbia during its re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere in 2003. Despite this heartbreaking tragedy, her contributions to science and space exploration continue to inspire future generations.
